Read Mark 13:1-8.

Today is the 25th Sunday after Pentecost.  During Pentecost, we grow closer to God and closer to one another. There are 2 Sundays left in the season of Pentecost.

Jesus was with his disciples in the city of Jerusalem.  As they came out of the temple, they saw large buildings and large stones.  Jesus had something to say about them.

Watch the video to find out what Jesus had to say:

Jesus told his disciples that one day those large buildings would fall down.  The disciples wanted to know when that would happen.  They were worried.  In fact, they were afraid.

Jesus told them not to worry and not to be afraid.  He said that we have to always be ready.  God is always working things together for good, even when scary things happen.  Jesus is always with us.

We can always be ready for whatever may happen because we know that Jesus is with us.  We are never alone.  Jesus is always with us.  We can be with others when they face scary or difficult times.  That’s one of the ways we can share God’s love with others.  We can always be ready to share God’s love.  We never know when we will meet someone who needs to know that Jesus loves them.  We can remind others that no matter what happens, God is working things together for good.  Nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.

Discuss

  • What makes you afraid?
  • How do you remember that Jesus is always with you?
  • How can you share Jesus’ love with others?

Activity

Jesus encourages his disciples to always be ready.  Put together a safety kit for your backpack.  Use a ziplock sandwich size bag.  Decide what things you will put inside that will help you always be ready.  You might want to consider these things:  bandaids, small package of Kleenex, a granola bar, fruit leather, a mask, a small hand sanitizer, etc.  You might want to consider making more than one of these safety kits and giving them to someone else.

Activity

In the video below, you will hear and see the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst.  In this book, Alexander has a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.  Sometimes we do, too.  But even when we do, Jesus is with us.  He is loving us.  God is working things together for good.  That terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day comes to an end and we begin a new day.

Closing Prayer

Jesus, thank you for always being with us.  Help us to be always ready to share you love with others.  Amen.
