Greetings St. Andrews Family,
I have two goldfish named Bert and Ernie. I actually think they are of the guppy variety but thankfully of the same sex according to the lady at the pet store right by church! I have them in a 5 gallon tank which offers plenty of room, and I bought a few small aquarium plants and colorful rocks.
They are about 6-7 months with me, and they are getting a bit trained! When I walk into the kitchen (they are on the far counter away from food prep, lol), they come to the side of the glass and begin to "wave!" It's the fish equivalent of wagging their tails! So, I have trained them to know when it's time to eat! Just like my mother did for me when I was little, but I digress.
However, I cannot train them to do what comes naturally. The pet store lady said they are fish who like to school together, meaning they are side by side most of the time. When I first placed them in the aquarium they started this by chasing each other around, and I wondered if some kind of aquarium divider would be needed. But, no, more than anything else they like to be close to each other, and they are side by side all the time throughout their movements in the aquarium!
Isn't the same true for us, fellow believers?? We are a "schooling" people aren't we? We want to be around and near others and yet have been mostly prevented over this last year. As the churches gradually open back up and the hoped for vaccines take effect, we will be together in all the ways we can. We are a family of faith sharing that faith with our sister congregation! Let's always continue to prefer being together in church, because we also have a God who loves to "school" with us and goes side by side as we negotiate this pandemic wilderness and the daily stress and strains. That, my friends, is what Lent is about as we journey to the Cross and beyond in our everyday lives and our life together on Sunday mornings!
God be with you until we meet again,
Peace, Pastor Doug
