Matthew 25:1-13
Peace and Quiet

Today we move back into the last three weeks of the Pentecost season of the Holy Spirit in, with and among us! That Spirit has brought us together around Word and Sacrament on this day the Lord has made. Our Gospel lesson today is a reminder to "keep awake" and alert for opportunities to serve the Lord and share God's love in this world. The bridegroom is coming, and our lamps need to have oil. In other words, Jesus is either coming back to earth, or we will go to Heaven. Either way, we stay alert and ready for love in the present day.

There is a fun Christian church camp song called "Give me oil in my lamp" that has many stanzas, one of which, is "Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning, burning, burning, give me oil in my lamp I pray!" Indeed, now more than ever, we keep burning for the love of Christ in our communities. God calls us to action, as the prophet Amos reminds us to "let justice roll down like waters." Paul's reminder is to encourage one another. It's a good day to be alive and in Christ and together for worship. Keep alert, friends, and let us encourage each other.
