The name Good Friday for the day on which the anniversary of the crucifixion is kept, originated with the English Church. In early Christian writings, the day is called the Pascal Day, and later names for it include the Day of Preparation, the Day of our Lord’s Passion and the day of Absolution. In England, during Anglo-Saxon times, it was known as Long Friday, probably because of the long fasts and services which mark the day. In the Eastern Church it is called Great Friday, and from the very earliest times the day appears to have been observed with strict fasting and humiliation in sorrow for the death of Christ and the sin which brought it about.
